Some people are now saying that Drifting is becoming more popular with Racers, Sponsors and the Public (than Drag Racing) because of 2 simple things ....SAFETY and ORGANIZATION !
Up until 2 years ago drifting was relatively disorganized ....start and finish times meant nothing, safety rules were a joke, the crowd showing up was just family and friends and whoever else happened to be walking by that wanted to watch for free....not exactly the audience a sponsor is looking for. Then it got organized by one company who had a comittment to develop the sport. Now there are international racers flying in to compete, international TV coverage by ESPN, an International Formula, all events are sanctioned by the appropriate Motorsport body, and lastly there are FIA safety regulations. The events held are full, they are an International quality event - one the whole family can go to, and one sponsors are prepared to support in a meaningful way. Many said it couldnt be done....well it has been done, and the events are here to stay. Sure, some complained but eventually they saw what was good for the sport and got in behind the momentum
NOW TO DRAG RACING ....Its still in the dark ages , people get hurt and people die simply because SOME of the tracks, event organizers, scrutineers, promoters and racers themselves either don't understand or simply cant be bothered. Drag Racing can be a very safe sport if people draw the line on standards and formulas. Thailand's history over the last 3 years in this sport would say its currently a very unsafe sport. Im a racer and Im also interested in growing the sport, but to do that, some fundamentals need to be addressed (in my opinion) :

1) There should be a Drag Racers Association - This would be an association that to race at ANY track in Thailand, you must be a member. Membership could be as low as 100 baht per year. No membership card, you dont run...no exceptions
2) The Association Sets the rules .... ie the Racers set the rules bi -annually...not promoters, not sponsors, not track owners, not people with a vested interest...but the Association. One set of rules across Thailand. This would allow a 2 year window for Racers to build and modify their cars to a known formula, not investing in a car and then because someone knows someone in control, the rules get changed, or a tire sponsor changes the rules to eliminate racers who donn use their tire
3) All events should be sanctioned by the appropriate Motor-sport Association - this would ensure the events are run on the same basis
4) Car Safety Rules need to be upgraded significantly - NHRA standard within 3 years - a 3 step approach to safe events. There are some BASIC safety rules that should be changed now eg Fuel tanks should NEVER be inside the car - it may look cool, but burning alive isnt. Likewise fuel lines should never be inside the car. Alloy Roll cages should be banned - might look cool, but are not functional. Parachutes for all cars running faster than X secs, full roll cages for cars running faster than Y secs, etc. Zero tolerance for non compliance on Safety regulations - same rules for everyone. You meet the rules or you dont run. Even simoe things like checking that helmets are strapped up. How many drivers have you seen pulling heir helmets of half way down the rack if they have faulted or the car isnt running. to do this one would need both hands off the steering wheel - or simply the helmet wasnt strapped up in the first place
5) Track owners should lease their tracks on a Turn key package, not just rent out the facility and leave it to the organizer to sort out safety, fire crews, ambulances etc.
6) Fire crews and ambulances should be at BOTH ends of the tracks - ie 1 fire crew & 1 ambulance a the start line...along with 1 fire crew & 1 ambulance at the finish line. Their engines MUST be running at all times, and they must be paying attention to each run. Sounds basic , but next time check it out.....
7) Events should run on time. Drag Racing cant still be running at 2am in the morning. Racers are tired and expected to run at 300 km/h ??? Its a recipe for disaster !! Spectators likewise dont want to be getting home at 3am in the morning. If the people taking the gate money and the sponsors want a "Full House" every week , they should figure out a way to get events finished by 10pm

These are just my thoughts on how to prevent injuries, save lives and help keep a great sport (of which I love and participate in) on a growth curve. Safe and well organized events mean more spectators, more drivers, more sponsors ...and so it goes. Im sure other readers may have a different perspective than I do. If so, post away as that's what a forum is all about . Maybe we might get enough interest to make some changes and make a difference

V8badboy, I could not agree more. Some people just take it for fun and the safety culture in Thailand is not there yet. And this means more money to invest for all, the track owners, the organizers and the car builders.

Thailand really needs to change... every year there are a few big crashes (biggest one last year many deaths)
simply because in thailand there are no real rules /standards each event has a different rule

we really need a Drag Racers Association 100bath is not much people modify there car for millions so 100bath for 365 days is nothing
this association should make the real rules what standards like
- faster then x sec needs a bigger licenses.
- faster then x sec needs a rollbar / cage.
- faster then x sec needs a parachute.
stop building OTOP thai made rollcages where every other shop has different standards
and stop buying fake stuff like a fake bucket seat, fake belts, home made rollbar's or other things that aren't at the standards.

let Bangkok drag avenue and Thepnakorn be head of the organization because we need to race on there tracks if they don't go green light with this then there will be a Association for nothing.
why cant we in Thailand not do like in The US its not that hard i think.
from the 100bath every year together we can upgrade the tracks or make it safer!
beter and safer track = faster times = more fun for racers and more fun to watch and it may attract more racers and sponsors
